About Me
Alex J. Wallach, AICP
Thank you for visiting my site. I am an experienced urban planner specializing in local land use planning. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Design with a minor in Architecture from the University at Buffalo, and Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from Columbia University. My master's thesis explored the issue of understanding park usership. My areas of expertise include zoning, land use, GIS, site design, community revitalization, and historic preservation. As a professional planner, I use my background and training in graphic design to create high-quality maps, reports, posters, and presentations. As a former store manager and supervisor, I bring strong interpersonal and managerial skills to my work. I am passionate about architecture and urban design, and have a special interest in the design of buildings and public spaces, particularity in transit-oriented downtown neighborhoods.
I have experience working on the federal level with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. As a planner with FEMA, I worked with several local municipalities in Suffolk County affected by Hurricane Sandy. My work with FEMA brought me to every town in Suffolk County, as well as several villages. For the past several years I’ve worked as a planner in the Towns of Smithtown and Babylon, where I've worked with Town Boards, Planning Boards, Boards of Zoning Appeals, stakeholders, and residents to administer a wide variety of applications. As a professional planner, I am dedicated to improving my community, where I employ my graphic design and writing skills to make complex planning issues clear to residents, developers, and local officials.
I am active in my local chapter of the American Planning Association (APA), and was admitted as a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) in 2015. Since January 2016, I have served as the Vice President of Professional Development of the NY Metro Chapter of the APA. I have a passion for local history and urban exploration, and my other hobbies include photography and travel. I am a licensed New York City tour guide, and an occasional contributor to the urban exploration blog Untapped Cities. I was born and raised on Long Island, New York, and I've also lived in Buffalo and Manhattan. I currently live in Smithtown.
